The theme of the World Youth Report 2007 is “ YoungPeople’s Transition to Adulthood: Progress and Challenges ”.The World Youth Report 2007 focuses on challenges in youth development inthe following world regions: Asia, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa,Middle East and North Africa, Small Island developing States, Countrieswith economies in transition and Developed market economies.The Report finds that the 1.2 billion people between the ages of 15 and 24years in 2007 – who constitutes 18 per cent of the world population-- arethe best educated youth generation in history and are a tremendous resourcefor national development.However, more than ten years after the General Assembly emphasized thatStates should “provide its young people with opportunities for obtainingeducation, for acquiring skills and for participating fully in all aspectsof society”, the Report also finds that youth development in all worldregions continues to be constrained by persistent obstacles at thecommunity, national and international levels.The Report calls on policy makers to focus on developing young people’scapacities through greater investment in areas such as education, healthand skills training and to provide and protect opportunities for youngpeople to participate in development as a matter of priority.
